IL: Contract bars hire of illegals
Contract bars hire of illegals
PLAINFIELD
May 25, 2007
By JANET LUNDQUIST Staff Writer
PLAINFIELD -- In what might be a first for area contractors, companies working on projects for the village of Plainfield now must agree not to hire illegal immigrants.
Village officials decided this week to take the extra step to ensure contractors follow immigration law.
Federal law already prohibits employers from knowingly hiring someone who is not authorized to work in the United States. It also requires employers to verify potential hires' identity and work eligibility.
Noticing that village contracts include paragraphs on following the Americans with Disabilities Act, Trustee Larry Vaupel proposed adding a line to municipal contracts saying companies would agree not to hire illegal immigrants.
Trustees did not object to adding the line to all future contracts, so it will be included from now on, said Village Administrator Chris Minick.
Vaupel said he did not know of any specific issues with illegal immigrants working in town, but said it was important for the village to "set the tone" for the local business community.
In the future, Vaupel said the board might want to consider other ways to ensure companies abide by immigration laws, such as licensing or business registration.
"As we continue to look at the issue, we need to take whatever steps necessary to make sure those laws are being followed," he said.
Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce President Liz Collins said she had not heard of any area municipalities taking similar action. Neither had Nancy Osborne, executive director of the Contractors Association of Will and Grundy Counties.
In the fall, village trustees in Carpentersville considered an ordinance that would that would have suspended licenses for business owners that hired illegal immigrants and penalized landlords who rented to them.
The board decided not to take action on the ordinance until it could see how illegal immigration laws fare in other communities.

How very encouraging for Illinois. We have been such a sanctuary state. Are we finally waking up too?!
I think I will go pick up a tailman and pray that this is true...

Plainfield looks well off but that's only because it was wiped off the map with a tornado 17 years ago. Ever since then they bought just about every bit of farmland and just build and build and build. Alot of people moved here from Chicago because at one time we had supposidly the best school district in the state because it used to be primarily a white area. It's not anymore. Plainfield proper has been a town that never wanted to grow. They wanted the small town atmosphere but now Joliet meshes into Plainfield which meshes into Naperville and Aurora and on down the line. There are alot of illegals here but they are far from poor. They have many bogus businesses and are employed in very well paying jobs. I called about having my driveway sealed but noticed he never seemed to have any workers that weren't hispanic. So I asked about whether he knew if they were illegal or not. He said he goes by the book but can't swear they haven't given him bogus papers or false identies but that his hands are tied as to what he can do to be absolutly positive. He takes out taxes and they are paid 27 dollars an hour. My husband delivers pizza's and so he see's peoples homes. There are these big beautiful homes with sheets hanging to seperate the various families living there. Looks are deceiving from the outside. I live between Joliet and Plainfield in an unincorporated area. I can go 1/4 mile and be considered in Plainfield and a couple blocks over and be in Joliet. I'm not in one of the big fancy houses people usually see with their first glimpse of Plainfield. We don't have the day laborers at Home Depot but we do have employment agencies who cater to illegal hispanics that get them on the construction crews etc throughout the area. There are people with money here but it's usually just the corrupt owner who hires the illegals. Most who live here don't work here. There are ALOT of commuters. More are also leaving here because of the massive congestion and increasing problem with the illegals. But most also just stick to themselves because they are too busy working and pretending to live the elite life. I didn't say that.....someone put that comment in the paper. They said Plainfield was "wannabe rich". Pay check to pay check just in fancier houses. Many hispanics have legal relatives they live with and we've always had hispanics here. This used to be agriculture but that ended after the tornado and many got into construction after the tornado since this place was wiped out. But they were all the nice hard-working English speakers of days past. Not so with the new influx. We are seeing complexes in the outer areas with the Spanish signs for their businesses but you wouldn't see them on a basic drive through.
Plainfield has pretty much been a racist town. I mean they didn't get their first black student till 1974 or 75. Now there are because they re-drew the districts to be more diverse. It doesn't surprise me the officials in Plainfield aren't trying to follow suit with Carpentersville because they are quickly seeing we would be next since we are surrounded by it. There's already gang problems and that's why they are the first to install video cameras in the highschools which have a direct link to the police station. Just like the building and population explosion.....it's gonna come to them if they don't take action and it will become their problem whether they want it or not and they know the area is a draw.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

In light of the fact that Plainfield is bordered by Joliet and Aurora, it doesn't surprise me since both of those cities have been burdened by hispanic gang activity for more than 2 decades. I work downtown (Chicago) and know quite a few people who live in Plainfield who fit your description of wanna bees. I'm sure watching your community and property values plummet is not a pretty sight. Unfortunately, we are all running out of places to hide the illegals and their poverty and culturally embedded barrio/crime wave is everywhere.
