Play the video (08/07/06) HEMPSTEAD - Immigrants and immigrant advocates took to the streets of Hempstead Monday to protest the arrests of dozens of illegal immigrants last week.

Demonstrators say deportation is not the answer and that hardworking individuals should not be targeted in an immigration sweep. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed "targeted enforcement actions" were conducted on Long Island last week, in which officers went after illegal immigrants with criminal records. Officials say the sweep netted 55 immigrants, including 14 fugitives. The other 41 are considered "collateral arrests," meaning they happened to be present when officers showed up.

Many protesters say they have no problem with ICE hunting down convicted criminals. However, they say hardworking people with families should be respected and not terrorized.
