Immigration Debate at WSU Takes Controversial Turn

As campus-wide events welcomed students at Wichita State University back for the fall semester, this one may have given some the opposite impression.

"I was a little upset and disgusted," says Hector Castania of HALO, the student Hispanic organization.

As part of the Welcomefest events to kick off the fall semester, the College Republicans invited students to compete in an illegal immigration obstacle course. Participants strapped on fake suicide bombs, jumped over a fence, strapped on a backpack and ran toward a blow-up doll of Governor Kathleen Sebelius, giving her a high-five at the finish.

The event was aimed at educating students about a 2004 Kansas law that allows some illegals to pay discounted in-state tuition at Kansas universities.

Some wonder whether it was done in good taste. Organizers say it was an effective way to get students' attention and inform them about what's going on.

"When they found out they were shocked," says WSU College Republicans President Brandon Rudkin. "They didn't realize that illegal immigrants had a better opportunity than a lot of other students that attend Wichita State University."

The Student Activity Council gave the College Republicans approval for the event.

Most of these college students have been pro - illegal, but NOW it's affecting them!!! Dream Act just passed. Now they will wake up.

Not this and many other Christians here. There times when it is the right thing to do, but it may also be right to fight as well, fighting is the right thing to do now.

The Daily Kooks have caught wind of the obstacle course and as usual, they have gone on an ignorant bashing spree of not only Republicans, but also Wichita State, the city of Wichita, and Kansas in general.
