    Immigration protest before BCS game

Immigration protesters to march before BCS game

    Associated Press
    Jan. 8, 2007 12:18 PM

GLENDALE - About 300 immigration rights advocates gathered in Glendale Monday for a planned march toward the University of Phoenix Stadium - site of Monday night's national college football championship game between Ohio State and Florida - even though they don't have a permit.

The City of Glendale denied them clearance to march. City spokeswoman Julie Frisoni said it would be impossible to ensure the marchers' safety because the roads will be clogged with traffic and there are no sidewalks along the road to the stadium.

"They've got women and children, they are marching and they want to go up 91st Avenue with no sidewalk," Fisone said. "We just can't have them do that, not today."

Nevertheless, the Arizona State University student who organized the march said it will go on. Carlos Garcia, 23, says it is the marchers' constitutional right to protest, although he said the protesters will obey any police commands.

Garcia and the immigration reform group Somos America want to draw attention to a new Arizona law they say will keep thousands of immigrant students from attending college. That law requires undocumented immigrants to pay out-of-state tuition, about three times the in-state amount.

Garcia said marchers also want to draw attention to a proposed federal law that would give children of illegal immigrants the chance to become U.S. citizens.

Please march! I love it, especially after the group was told "NO" for safety reasons. I hope this march disrupts as many American citizens as humanly possible. I love it when illegals and their supporters piss American citizens off!

Haven't they got the word, marches backfire on them? And they couldn't get a permit but will do it anyway? Laws broken right and left so just more examples of that too.

By all means, March away! Illegals aliens publically demanding the same rights as American citizens is always good for our cause.

Now, lets just hope it gets some good media coverage.

If they disobey orders and someone gets hit by a car or a fight occurs the protesters will blame us and/or the police.
It is not the place to protest and seems to me to be a set up. They want confrontation so they can blame us and call us racist. If there is tailgating going on and alcohol is present than you will always get someone doing something stupid. I have seen it at the Miami Dolphins games as I have broken up fights there and have heard about the University of Miami games where there have been some good fights at times as well.

I heard that Steny gave everyone the day off for the big game, maybe that is why they are seizing the opportunity.

    March protests immigrant tuition measure

    Michael Kiefer

GLENDALE - More than 500 protesters took to the streets hoping to draw national attention to a new state law requiring undocumented immigrants to pay out-of-state tuition.

The protestors hoped to have their march end at the University of Phoenix stadium, the home of today's BCS National Bowl Championship Game, but officials with the city of Glendale limited the march route to keep protestors out of the stadium's sight.

The protestors marched from Camelback Road to Missouri, where they met police. Eight of the protest leaders crossed into Missouri and were issued citations.

Protestors then turned back and marched to their starting point. They were hoping to bring attention to Proposition 300, which was passed by voters in November and promote the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, or DREAM Act.

The act would grant conditional permanent legal status to undocumented students who meet certain requirements.
