Immigration Reform Bill In The Works
Live 5 News
Monday night, a special committee met in the Upstate to let people know about a new immigration reform bill. If passed, the Illegal Immigration Reform Act of 2007 would do everything from cracking down on identity theft to offering an illegal immigration hotline.

One of the key lawmakers behind the bill, Republican Senator Chip Campsen, says stopping identity theft is the first priority, "Really, fake IDs are the mothers milk of illegal immigration so if you crack down on the fake ID industry, you really crack down on illegal immigration."

Senator Campsen says the bill will be a priority when the General Assembly re-convenes in January.

In our exclusive Live 5 News survey, we asked if illegal immigration in America was a problem and if so, how big of a problem?

43% of you say it has become not just a problem, but a crisis in America. 42% feel it is definitely a major problem.

Then we broke it down even further. Is illegal immigration a problem where you live? Again 21% say it's a crisis locally; 31% say it's a major problem. The same amount felt that here at home its a minor problem.

When asked if local governments should be allowed to punish those who hire illegal immigrants, an overwhelming 67% would give city, town and county councils that ability, while 26% would not.
