    Company Recovers After Immigration Raid

A recent immigration raid in Stillmore, Emanuel County, has taken a toll on the small town and one of its main employers.

WTOC was there earlier this month when some of the workers from the Crider Poultry Packing Plant were taken into custody. In all, about 120 workers were arrested, and hundreds more fled before they could be caught.

The plant lost almost seventy percent of its workers.

Since the arrests by immigration and customs enforcement, Crider has raised wages and has been forced to hire locally.

Dave Purtle, with Crider Poultry, says the company certainly doesn't want to be back in the situation again where there is the possibility of losing so many employees.

Agents have been back at the plant since the arrests. They are training the company to spot fake documents.

Why is this company not being prosecuted for hiring illegal aliens? What is going on here? This shows that our government is not serious on getting tough on companies that hire illegal aliens.

This happened very recently, they lost more than a hundred workers and have been able to replace them LEGALLY already. This just reinforces the fact that Americans ARE willing to do these jobs.

Kate, you are partially correct. Yes Americans will do the job but not when the owner is willing to pay so little. Americans cannot work and support their families on the money they pay illegals. The company should definitely be punished. Asset forfeiture would be nice.

I agree. If we are really going to be serious about this we have got to go after the employers! As it is right now this is for show. No penalty to the employer and what about the 120? What happen to them? They are probably already employed somewhere else in the country. Even if they were deported they have probably come back in because the border is no where close to being secured in spite of the dog and pony show going on down there.

Many then took year-round jobs at the Crider plant, with a workforce of about 900.
OK, 70% of 900 is about 630. So that leaves 500 probably already in NC.

Swatchick, yes, I totally agree. My point was that if they do raise the salaries, Americans are there ready to step in and take these jobs. I would be interested to know how much more the salaries are now. As a consumer, I am happy to pay more for food and goods if it means the jobs are going to Americans.

Kate: I agree with your comment on paying more for items made by Americans. If they are made by Mexiacns or other illegals you will never see the savings passed down to consumers.

    Good!
I don't care what you call me, so long as you call me AMERICAN.

Would someone please explain to me how you can have over 600 illegal alien employees in the same plant and not know it ???? The owner must be a personal friend of the bush administration.
