We have been snake-bitten so many times not only with previous admins, but this one as well. If I'm right, this would be a major slap in the face to all of us and would assure that Trump is gone in 2020. I was really excited when I first heard Trump say he would put troops on the border, but when I heard it was NG, my first reaction was, oh no this is 2006 all over again and that was before I read the NBC article. If I'm wrong, I will apologize for over reacting. I'm afraid that my instincts are right way more often then they are wrong. I guess we shall see.
You're right, they weren't armed. I remember a situation back then concerning this. I remember hearing about a group of NG having to call in for help because their post was being approached by armed drug cartel members. The NG group that was performing surveillance duties were not armed and couldn't protect themselves.

I believe you're right, the NG will have no law enforcement authority which probably mean they will not be armed. We'll see ...

Those military commanders you're talking about work for the Secretary of Defense, who in turn works for the Commander in Chief. What I'm saying is policy wasn't set by those "Military Commanders" who are required to follow orders.

"Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has told Mexican authorities that National Guard troops deployed on the border would not be armed or participate in immigration or customs duties"

Guard units at the border won’t be armed, administration tells Mexico

So if Trump tells them to take their guns, they will. Right? I mean they wouldn't violate an order from the President, would they? Lets hope not. No clue why any American would order or even suggest that National Guard Troops being sent on a mission to secure the border and combat dangerous criminals would be ordered to do so unarmed. Craziest thing in the world.
