-NEW HAVEN — The city unveiled a new policy for how police interact with illegal immigrants in New Haven that is akin to the military’s famous "don’t ask, don’t tell" approach.

A new general order at the Police Department forbids officers from inquiring about a person’s immigration status unless they’re investigating criminal activity.

Police are not to inquire about the status of crime victims, witnesses or others who call or approach police seeking assistance, according to the order, which will be signed by police Chief Francisco Ortiz Jr.

Mayor John DeStefano Jr. said the goal is to make all residents — regardless of whether they’re here legally or not — comfortable seeking assistance from police.

Undocumented workers often are the victims of crime and don’t report it out of fear of being deported. They’re often attractive prey because without legal documentation they can’t get bank accounts, and keep their money with them or in their homes.

By rough estimate, there are about 10,000 undocumented aliens in New Haven alone. It’s impossible to say how many have been victims of crime and not reported it.

Derek Slap, DeStefano’s spokesman, said he believes the policy is the first of its kind in the state. It’s been in the works for more than six months as officials worked out the language and hashed out details with the police union.

Under Ortiz, there had been an unwritten policy of not inquiring about immigration status, but Slap said the city created a written version to ensure the policy is clear to officers and the community.

This weekend, the city will start a publicity campaign to get the word out to aliens about the policy.

The general order states the department will continue to work with federal authorities in investigating and apprehending illegal immigrants suspected of criminal activity.

City police, however, are instructed not to serve administrative warrants filed by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that are filed in the national criminal database.

One of our local police officers said he spend 50% of his time dealing with people who don't speak English. Accidents and domestic violence. Our tax dollars paying for police to ASSIST CRIMINALS!

Surely ICE isn't okay with the above. Wouldn't that be the same as obstructing justice? Where are our anti-illegal immigrant lawyers! Geez, the illegal immigrants seem to have tons of them, but all we seem to have is Judicial Watch. I wonder J.W. is aware of what New Haven is doing? This can not be allowed to happen, not in America!
