State Rep. Kyrsten Sinema serves District 15, central Phoenix, in the Arizona State Legislature. The youngest legislator in the state, she has nonetheless earned much distinction in just one year in office. She serves as the Ranking Democrat of the Environment Committee, and was named the Sierra Club's Most Valuable Member in the 2005 session. The East Valley Tribune, one of metro Phoenix's two flagship newspapers, named her as one of 4 Legislators to Watch – the only Democrat, and the only woman named. Kyrsten is known at the capitol and in the media as an advocate and leading voice for equal rights for migrants and LGBTQ people. Professionally, Kyrsten works as an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University and practices criminal defense law while not in session. On the weekends, she co-hosts The Truth to Power Hour, a talk radio show on Air America Phoenix covering statewide and national politics. She is an avid social justice activist and has worked for the last decade in Arizona on issues such as peace, anti-globalization, just health care and human service provision, criminal justice, environmental justice, and human and civil rights. Currently, Kyrsten serves as the Chair of Arizona Together, a statewide political committee formed to defeat the marriage amendment facing Arizona voters in November 2006.
