AUSTIN - A man accused of managing brothels in the Austin area and Oklahoma City that used smuggled immigrant women pleaded guilty to federal charges.

Juan Balderas-Orosco, 34, faces up to 30 years in prison for transportation for prostitution, importation of illegal aliens and conspiracy to smuggle, transport and harbor illegal aliens. He pleaded guilty Friday.

Authorities say the Austin and Oklahoma city operations Balderas ran were part of a larger ring that included brothels in 13 cities, including ones across Texas, and in Las Vegas, New York City and Atlanta.

The ringleaders sneaked hundreds of women into the country and forced them to have sex with as many as 40 men a day, many of them illegal immigrants. They moved the women from brothel to brothel and kept their earnings, according to court documents.

"The prostitutes reported they were not free to leave the brothels on their own, and the brothel operators were usually armed with firearms," according to a court document.

In 2002, immigration agents and Austin police raided a house, which they later said was a brothel run by Balderas.

Balderas was captured last year. He is the lead defendant in an indictment that charges 12 people with smuggling and prostitution crimes. Seven have pleaded guilty in the case, including Mohammad Arami, who pleaded guilty Friday to conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Three defendants are at large, including a woman accused of running the brothel ring.

Maria Camacho-Teran, considered one of the top leaders of the brothel ring, was arrested in December. Her case is pending.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man accused of managing brothels in Texas and Oklahoma has pleaded guilty to smuggling women into the country to work as prostitutes.

The Austin and Oklahoma City operations run by Juan Balderas-Orosco, 34, were part of a larger ring that included brothels in 13 cities in Texas and across the nation, including New York City, Las Vegas and Atlanta, according to documents filed with his plea on Friday.

The ringleaders sneaked hundreds of women into the United States, most of them from Latin American countries, and forced them to have sex with as many as 40 men a day, according to the court documents. They moved the women from brothel to brothel and kept the earnings.

"The prostitutes reported they were not free to leave the brothels on their own, and the brothel operators were usually armed with firearms," according to the filing.

Balderas-Orosco, 34, pleaded guilty to federal charges of transportation for prostitution, importation of illegal aliens, importation of illegal aliens and conspiracy to smuggle, transport and harbor illegal aliens. He faces a maximum prison sentence of 30 years.
Balderas' lawyer, Kristin Etter, said case was a symptom of a broken immigration system. With limited opportunities for immigrants to come to the U.S., some "are pushed into this underground economy and forced into these kinds of jobs," she said.
AUSTIN — A man who pleaded guilty to managing brothels as part of a nationwide ring that forced immigrant women into prostitution was sentenced to six years and eight months in federal prison.

Juan Balderas-Orosco, a Mexican citizen, will be deported upon his release from prison.

Four others connected to the case were also sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks.

Twelve people have faced smuggling, prostitution and financial charges related to the case. Six have been sentenced, three have pleaded guilty and await sentencing and three are fugitives.

Balderas ran brothels in Travis County, east of Austin, Oklahoma City, Las Vegas and Fort Worth, according to court documents and testimony. The brothels were part of a crime network that included brothels in at least 13 states.

The ringleaders sneaked hundreds of women, mostly from Latin America, into the country and forced them to have sex with as many as 40 men a day, many of them also illegal immigrants. They moved the women from brothel to brothel and kept their earnings, according to court documents.

During the sentencing hearing Friday, Balderas' attorney argued that the women who worked as prostitutes were given cell phones, allowed to keep some of their earnings and enjoyed periods of freedom.

Sparks disagreed with the characterization that their lives weren't so bad, saying the women were like prisoners.

The immigration system is broken. There are no wholesome jobs for these poor illegals, so they have to resort to smuggling and prostitution in order to make a living in America. You know, to "Live the American Dream".

Six years and eight months is just a slap on the wrist for this guy. He should be in prison for the rest of his life.

Cat houses along with cock fights and being drunk every night. We certainly need more "immigrants".
