Maryland Community Tries to Become 'Sanctuary City' for Illegals
posted 9:16 pm Tue February 19, 2008 - Mt. Rainier, Md.
A Maryland community voted to pass a controversial proposal that will make it a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants, but it was tabled indefinitely.
City leaders are ready to make Mt. Rainier a sanctuary city, prohibiting local agencies from enforcing immigration laws and inquiring about a person's legal status. Most residents support the idea to open it's doors. "I hope that Mt. Rainier can be a place of welcome for all," said one resident. Another said, "There is continuity in remembering where we, as a nation, came from."
Several aggressive watch dog groups, such as "Help Save Maryland" are applying heavy pressure on local leaders. They're afraid that attracting illegal immigrants will over run schools and take jobs from legal citizens.
"People who break the law are getting hired and hurting a lot of my people," said resident Intisar Haamid.
A legal resident and native of Guatemala believes illegals should go through the correct channels like he did. He says his construction company is bankrupt because of the over flow of undocumented workers.
"If we try to do things legally we are at a disadvantage, competing against be people who have no obligations whatsoever."
Even after a fair amount of opposition, even from the mayor, city leaders decided to pass the measure in a 3-to-2 vote, but the mayor tabled the subject indefinitely, leaving the issue undecided.

Well, they can have them all. Then we will see just how fast they want to continue being a sanctuary city. They should come here to LA or San Bernardino, Mexifornia. If they had to live like we do, they would change their mind fast.
