McCaskill Calls For A Crackdown On Hiring Illegals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is calling upon the nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) program to focus on cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants as an important part of an overall strategy to deter illegal immigration.

As a former prosecutor, McCaskill has long believed that employer enforcement is a straight-forward and cost-effective way to reduce the incentives for illegal immigrants to enter the United States. Today, in a hearing of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, McCaskill urged John Morton, tapped to head ICE, to prioritize investigating and punishing employers who refuse to play by the rules by continuing to hire undocumented workers.

“There is a huge underground economy here. It really would be like shooting fish in a barrel,â€
