Organizers of a petition drive to repeal Maryland’s Dream Act have even surprised themselves by apparently collecting nearly 62,500 signatures - more than three times the minimum for the first deadline.

I'm amazed at how many powerful groups/people in this country continually try to thwart any attempt to try to control illegal immigration in our country.

MD 'Dream Act' Likely Not to Take Effect Friday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Maryland's "Dream Act" is likely to be put on-hold as it appears headed for a referendum.

Thursday night is the deadline for opponents to turn in a petition to put the controversial law to voters. The measure would offer in-state college tuition to illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements.

Opponents need to turn in nearly 56,000 valid signatures by midnight to put the law on next year's ballot and stop it from taking effect tomorrow.

Republican State Delegate Neil Parrott, who is leading the effort, says he will personally bring the petitions to the Secretary of State's office at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
