On Monday, June 15, the Mexican Consulatehosted a ceremony commemorating the 3rd anniversary of the signature of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act , or DACA. The Act allows persons who arrived in the United States before the age of 16, have no criminal record, earned a GED or honorable discharge from the military, to obtain deferred deportation status and work permits. Once approved, DACA beneficiaries, also called “dreamers” can continue their studies or seek lawful employment.

Because many of the “Dreamers” in Houston were born in Mexico and came to the USA with their parents, the impact of DACA has been particularly felt by the Mexican community. The ceremony, entirely in Spanish, was attended by about 100 guests including students, Consults, immigration attorneys and activists working with immigration support organizations. Mexican Consul General Oscar Rodriguez Cabrera delivered the keynote address, followed by speeches by Oscar Hernandez, organizer of the Houston Branch of United We Dream, and Karia Perez, a Dreamer and recent graduate of the University of Houston who will start law school in the fall. At the close of presentations the Consul, members of the Consular Corps signed a letter to Communities benefitting from DACA (Carta a las comunidades beneficiadas por DACA).

All the speakers emphasized the wide range of opportunities and benefits of the current DACA statute and hopes for expanded reforms including President Obama's Executive Actions, now disputed in the federal courts.
