LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- A 26-year-old Chiapas, Mexico, man was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison after being convicted in a case in which he was accused of trying to take a 13-year-old girl from Mobile, Alabama, with him back to Mexico, federal prosecutors say.

Alejandro Jimenez-Rodas was sentenced Tuesday to 46 months for travel with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and he received a concurrent sentence of 36 months for falsely claiming to be a United States citizen, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After his prison term, Jimenez-Rodas will be on supervised release for 5 years and will be required to register as a sex offender, prosecutors said.

The charges against Jimenez-Rodas stemmed from his interview with officials on Aug. 10, 2010, at the United States Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 10 in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, according to court documents. Jimenez-Rodas, a passenger on a Greyhound bus, was questioned by Border Patrol agents and falsely claimed that he had been born in Alabama and was a U.S. citizen, the documents state.

When questioned, Jimenez-Rodas was traveling with a 13-year-old girl. Jimenez-Rodas admitted during an Oct. 28, 2010, plea hearing that he was traveling from Mobile to Tijuana, Mexico, with the girl, according to prosecutors and documents in the case. Jimenez-Rodas said he planned to take the girl to Chiapas, Mexico, to live with him and he admitted that he had been in an ongoing sexual relationship with the girl since April 2010, documents state.

Jimenez-Rodas was arrested after being detained Aug. 10, 2010, and has remained in custody since then.
