MCALLEN - Commandante Gilberto Lerma Plata was the state police commander in Miguel Aleman and Reynosa. Drug Enforcement Agency agents arrested him last week at one of the bridges in the Rio Grande Valley.
An indictment says Lerma Plata smuggled five kilos of cocaine and more than a ton of marijuana into the U.S. since 2006. CHANNEL 5 NEWS sources say Lerma Plata is connected to the Gulf Cartel. He's also related to the former governor of Tamaulipas, Manuel Cavazos.
Cavazos is under investigation by the Mexico's attorney general.
"These people are very powerful. They have the inside intelligence to the cartels on the Mexican side; they have the contact on the American side of the fence," says former DEA supervisor Phil Jordan.
Jordan tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS one of the reasons the U.S. Attorney's Office is handling the case against Lerma Plata is corruption. "To avoid any conflict of interest or a leak of an investigation along the U.S.-Mexican border, because we do have a corruption problem," says Jordan.
Lerma Plata will make his first appearance in a McAllen federal court Thursday.
