CA-Illegals Closer to Getting Driver's Licenses

Undocumented Immigrants Closer to Getting Driver's Licenses

Bill Could Allow Undocumented to Get Driver's Licenses

    Senator Cedillo's website

By: Dani Carlson and Kyra Jenkins

A California bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to get drivers licenses is one step closer to becoming a state law.

State senate bill 60 passed through the assembly Friday.

If the bill becomes law, legislators say the estimated 2.2 million undocumented immigrants in California will apply for one, an idea that's creating a lot of controversy.

"I think they should be able to get licenses just like everybody else," said Nicole Holland, a Fresnan who supports the bill.

"They are already committing a crime coming over here," said Albert Ratliff, a Fresnan who opposes the bill. "I don't think anybody deserves a license until they are a citizen."

Legislators said that debate is one reason why S.B. 60 hasn't passed into law.

Senator Gilbert Cedillo, (D-Los Angeles) Senate District 22, is the bill's author. He said he started working on it about 10 years ago.

"This isn't about immigrants, it's about highway safety," said Cedillo.

According to Cedillo's bill, about two million undocumented immigrants would be expected to apply for a driver's license within 18 months of it the law takes effect.

He said Governor Schwarzenegger needs to think about the whole picture, before he decides to sign or veto it.

"As the legislature, it's our job to make the roadways safe," said Cedillo.

"The reality is most people are going to drive whether they have a license or not because they need to work, the system is broken by not giving drivers licenses," said Camille Cook.

Cook is an immigration attorney. She pointed out there is another benefit to the bill, which is identifying the undocumented.

"It's better to know who they are," said Cook. "If they don't have licenses we have no idea who they are if they're not in the system."

And that's a benefit at least one Fresnan says is a good idea.

"I think it does make sense as long as they do a background check no D.U.I's and stuff," said Fresnan, Jose Navarrette.

"This isn't about immigrants, it's about highway safety," said Cedillo.

So would making them all citizens also make us safer? And why would it help identify them when so many have fake ids to start with. And they're using stolen or false ss numbers too. You'll never know their real identity and it won't make the roads safer. Cedillo has been working on a stupid bill for ten years. Its all about giving law breaking illegal aliens what they want at the expense of law abiding citizens.

That's right its NOT about IMMIGRANTS. It's about ILLEGAL ALIENS. CA has motor voter. All I can say folks is if you are in CA, and it passes the House you'd better be on the phones to Arnold. He got in by saying NO licenses to illegals. Cedillo is not a smart man. With the Bologna murders, the Shaw murder, etc. His timing stinks.

This needs to go to all of the CA radio stations. Are they any CA in the houses today to get this to the CA radio stations?

this is going to end in tears. The so-called Hispanic leaders don't want to understand that a tide against misplaced compassion and national apathy has turned against this non-sense. Go ahead Cedillo, go ahead make yourself look out of touch, on the wrong side of the illegal immigration argument. This giddiness for power seeking to win a demographic hegemony contest needs to be denounced and they need to be exposed again and again and again!

Maybe this is good for the Governor's race. It will enrage the majority of Californians. IF the challenger is decent, then he can use this very thing about the thirst for power and turning their backs on the people who have built the state.

These of CA must be IGNORANT!! If they are illegal, using stolen identities you don't know who they are! If that was the case we in Maine would know who they are? Be serious and do your homework. DO the math.

STOP all Federal funding if CA allows more corruption! They are the main reason we are in this predicament. They have 1/3 of the illegals there!
They deserve ALL the gang activity that they have.
    They deserve a water shortage!
They deserve to run out of fuel!!

We need to protest California and the nuts running it?

What is with you people? Are you being bribed, or paid off with your illegal voting practices? Or maybe it's that important to supply your drug habits? I have 2 words for you .... Narcotics Anonymous!

I would love to be a fly on the wall at ICE and see what they are saying in the safety of their own offices about this stupidity making their jobs that much more difficult.

CALIFORNIA IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN FOR BALANCED BUDGET

CALIFORNIA IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN FOR BALANCED BUDGET

SACRAMENTO, CA (KGO) -- State lawmakers unveiled a package of 20 bills, aimed at saving money and balancing the state budget by targeting illegal ailens.

Assembly members want to chip away at the state deficit by checking the immigration status of those getting state-funded social benefits and jobs. They especially want to crackdown on those who have committed crimes.

"California is on a financial life raft that is sinking, but at the same time, we continue to pull on more and more people on board," said Assemblyman Jim Silva (R) of Huntington Beach.

Many of the proposals concentrate on criminal activity because in 2006 - 2007, it cost the state roughly $850,000,000 million dollars to incarcerate more than 17,000 illegal immigrants.

    Among the proposals:

    - Adding ten years to prison sentences for felonies if the illegal had been previously deported.

    - Checking the immigration status of DUI offenders

    - Requiring local law enforcement to cooperate with INS

    - Denying bail for gang-related or violent crimes

    - And reporting dangerous juveniles to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.

"To the extent we have criminal activity in our state, we should address it very, very vigorously" said state Senior Gil Cedillo (D) of Los Angeles, Vice-Chairman of the Latino Caucus.

"I think the law enforcement agencies in my city should be focused on crime and violence, which is starting to creep up," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Assemblyman John Benoit(R) of Bermuda Dunes is a law enforcement veteran-turned politician, who says it's time cops are part of the solution.
"I have been involved in stopping, finding, and in some cases, deporting people here illegally. I think the rule of law is the reason the United States stands out among nations," said Assemblyman Benoit.

The federal government is supposed to help pay for jailing illegal immigrants who commit crimes, but California got reimbursed only $100,000,000 dollars last year, less than 13 percent of the actual costs.
