Two Greenport men who authorities say are members of the notorious MS-13 street gang have been arrested in connection with a beating and robbery in the village, Southold police said.

The attack occurred about 10:30 p.m. Monday at the Fourth Street bus stop in Greenport, said police, who added that the incident was neither random nor part of a larger trend.

Carlos Enriques Campos, 20, and Salvador Amadeo Salazar-Orellana, 23, both of Greenport, were arrested on charges of second-degree gang assault and second-degree robbery, authorities said.

According to a police report, Campos and Salazar-Orellana were among a group of six or seven men who attacked two Shelter Island men, Guadalupe Gomez, 28, and Martin Clarke, 21, with an aluminum baseball bat while the victims waited at the bus stop.

The victims were taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital. Gomez was treated for a head fracture, and Clarke for a fractured cheek bone and other injuries, police said. They have since been released.

Police said the assailants identified themselves as members of La Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, during the attack, and wore blue and white clothing that is a trademark of the Salvadoran street gang.

Though the victim's gold chains were stolen during the assault, police believe the motive was not robbery, but stemmed from a previous dispute, said Det. Sgt. John Sinning of Southold Town police.

Sinning said the last gang-related arrest in Southold occurred two years ago.
