CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An illegal immigrant accused of plotting to kidnap two girls from a bus stop made his first court appearance on Monday.

Ruben Garcia-Rosario and his wife, Linda Gonzalez, are accused of plotting to kidnap the girls from Cornelius.

Garcia-Rosario faces several charges including attempted kidnapping, conspiracy to kidnap and aiding and abetting.

According to a search warrant, Garcia-Rosario confessed to the crimes and a ransom note was found during his arrest.

Police say the kidnapping plot was foiled because the girls noticed something suspicious and told their parents.

Garcia-Rosario had worked for the family as a painter at their home.

He was given a court-appointed attorney in court on Monday. A detention hearing is scheduled for Nov. 30.

The government has asked that Garcia-Rosario be held without bond. Prosecutors also want his wife extradited to North Carolina from Texas, where she is currently being held.
