    Hazleton Impacted by Immigration Ordinance
    Story posted on 2006-08-25 09:04:00
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First came the debate, now comes the fallout. Some businesses and residents of Hazleton are starting to feel the heat just weeks after council approved Mayor Lou Barletta's proposed ordinance targeting undocumented immigrants. And when 69 News went to Hazelton a few weeks ago the streets were bustling with people. This time WFMZ's Carl Madonna had trouble finding a single person walking along Wyoming Street.

Boarded up storefronts, for rent signs and work available sings, ever since the Illegal Immigration Relief Ordinance passed in Hazleton, these signs are popping up everyday.
    Sarah Soto:
8:57 "...a lot of people have left the town."
    Cesar Cruz:
12:23 "...if you see down there, there is another cafeteria that is no longer open, some people feeling like they have heat on them, Spanish people."
    Madonna:
Business has been down because most of the people who patronize these shops have scattered.
    Cruz:
    14:04 "..some people are afraid."
    Sarah Soto:
9:08 "...now you hardly see any people walking by."
    Enrique:
25:24 "...you can tell by looking down the avenue sometimes you don't see two cars in three blocks." Madonna:
Business has been especially slow for Enrique Salazar. His business, Royal Prestige has seen a 45% dip in sales compared to this time last year.
The past few weeks have been so slow, that Enrique was forced to fire his secretary of almost two years.
    Enrique:
24:34 "...so far it's so slow that we cannot have someone here making 300 dollars just sitting down."
    Madonna:
Even though business along Wyoming Street has stalled and shops continue to fold, some residents say the city feels a little safer.
    Sarah Soto:
9:25 "...do you think it's because of this ordinance, yes, good thing, yes especially for people that have kids."

And while in Hazleton, our news crew also ran into representatives from the Puerto Rican Legal Defense Fund.
The representatives were taking pictures of some of those boarded up storefronts.
They are among a long list of lawyers now waiting for a judge to hopefully overturn what Mayor Lou Barletta has enacted.

Hazeltown will become a booming town, when this settles down. Can you imagine the people that would like to find a nice little town to retire in with NO Illegal Aliens! I'm sure Hazelton will be just fine without all the crime.

Hazelton will be just fine, the local economy will pick up in the upcoming months. Besides, if this is an example of what America has to go through to get rid of all of these illegals, then so be it. Time is up for putting our economy in front of our laws..period.

I wonder how many illegals were in this town if it is half empty now ?
It means there are more illegals than we even imagine - scary .
And this is so sick - to sue the city for following the laws .
Can we sue the "sanctuary cities " for not following the laws ?

I still do not understand this game where the only rule is
" cater illegals at any cost "

    I have a story .

There were some "sugar " ants in my house for a while .
I do not like killing anything alive - so I tried to be very neat , so there will be even no crumbs for them to eat . Still they stayed .
I tried to make peace with them - after all , these are just tiny illegal ants .
Now , I went to travel for a while and I am coming back to see that the big black and red " terrorist " ants came in following the " sugar " ants .
They attacked my food and scared me badly .
So , I had to call the Pest Control - they sprayed the house from the outside and inside , they left some ants traps and now there are no ants in my house - neither sugar , no terrorist ants left .
I have my house and food for myself and I can have peace and rest without worrying - who will be the next invader ??
The moral for me is - it can be dangerous to try to justify and to be nice to something what is wrong .

The same is with Hazeltown - sugar and terrorist ants were forced to leave - now people can have the town for themselves , they can have rest and peace / as long as the Pest Control is doing its job / .

We all knew they'd play this crushed economy song.
Illegal business breeds illegal business. An honest business can't compete. Now a person can open a business there on a level playing field. There's certainly a government there serious about helping real citizens. Sounds attractive to me.

I am just so happy the ordinances worked, and the invaders are leaving.

Are these boarded up buildings, and empty houses, the places that were over run by illegals?

If that's the case, then the buildings should remain empty until good hard working Americans can come in and make that town the safe clean neighborhood it once was.

At least the tax paying residents can feel safe to walk down the streets, once more.

As far as we've learned - the illegals are not leaving - they are rearranging their positions , reinforcing them .
