TRENTON β New Jersey's attorney general is warning two law enforcement agencies to follow the rules when questioning people about their immigration status.
The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office and the Morristown Police Department are two of 11 jurisdictions in the nation that were accepted into a federal program that allows them to act on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
State Attorney General Anne Milgram today told the departments officers can only ask about immigration status after they have arrested a person on suspicion of a serious crime, not as part of an "on-the-street encounter."
