46 illegal Guatemalan immigrants apprehended in southeastern Mexico
A total of 46 illegal immigrants from Guatemala were arrested on Sunday on a highway in the southeastern Mexican state of Chiapas, said Mexico's Federal Preventive Police (PFP).

The illegal immigrants, including two women and three children, were hiding in the false bottom of a 1994 DINA truck and discovered at a check point on the Chiapas-Ocosocuautla highway, said the police.

They have been turned over to Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) in the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of the state of Chiapas, to be sent back to Guatemala.

At least 135 illegal immigrants have been captured in Mexico in the past month, trying to cross to the United States.

According to non-governmental organizations that provide assistance to Central American immigrants, some 500 immigrants die every year in their attempts to reach the United States by crossing Mexico.
