The new policy requires police to check the citizenship status of every person they arrest, but only after they are in police custody.

A previous policy required authorities to check the immigration status of any suspect if there was probable cause to believe the person was in the country illegally. That was changed after concerns that the first policy could have led to racial profiling.

The police department announced Monday that all officers have been trained in the new procedures.
