Oregon Drivers Card, Measure 88 Fails

Tuesday, November 04, 2014
Measure 88 was voted down, meaning four-year driver licenses will not be available be to undocumented residents, according to DHM political researcher Tim Hibbits and KPTV.
At 9:30 p.m., with 68 percent of the votes in, the measure was failing 68 percent to 32 percent.
The measure was put on the ballot after a 2013 Oregon legislature passed SB 833 that allowed the DMV to issue driver cards to undocumented residents. Two groups, Oregonians for Immigration Reform PAC and the Protect Oregon Driver Licenses Committee, led the petition campaign to put the decision to voters.
In 2008, Oregon passed a law requiring proof of citizenship or legal residency to obtain a drivers license. Since then, activists groups have tried to get bills passed to overturn the law. Last year’s, SB 833, was the first successful one.
Supporters of the measure say driver cards will keep motorists safe by lowering the number of uninsured and unlicensed drivers and would allow undocumented residents to travel for work or school. However, opponents say it would've increased illegal immigration and that the wording of the bill allows for loopholes in identifying people and requiring insurance.
Polls suggested the measure would fail, with 60 percent of voters saying they would vote against it.
Opponents of Measure 88 included Oregon senators and representatives along with several law enforcement officials. The Oregonians for Immigration Reform PAC and the Protect Oregon Driver Licenses Committee received $62,215.06 in contributions altogether. The group Yes on Oregon Safe Roads PAC, that opposed the ballot measure, raised less than $594,109.92 in contributions.

Oregon Voters Overwhelming Reject Driver's Licenses for Illegals
by Tony Lee 5 Nov 2014, 7:06 AM PDT
On Tuesday, Oregon voters rejected an initiative (Measure 88 ) to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants even after the proponents for the licenses outspent opponents by more than ten to one.
The vote was not even close, as Oregon news outlets called the race right after polls closed.
With 80% of the votes in, nearly 70% (66.7%) of Oregon voters rejected the measure, while 32.5% approved. Last month, 61% of likely voters in Oregon said they were opposed to the measure, with 53% of those voters saying they were certain to vote against it.
According to KGW, the driver’s license would allow illegal immigrants to “drive in the state for four years.” Illegal immigrants who had “lived in the state for at least a year” would have been eligible.
After Oregon Governor John Kitzahber (D) signed the law that approved driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants in 2013, the Protect Oregon Driver Licenses group formed and gathered the required number of signatures to refer the issue to the ballot.

Oregon Defeats Driver’s Licenses For Illegals
By Warner Todd Huston
2 7:40 am November 5, 2014
Liberal Oregon voters defeated a ballot measure on Election Day that would have given illegal aliens a legal driver’s license in the Beaver State.
Measure 88 would have given a free driver’s card to anyone who could not prove legal residency in the state.
The measure was defeated even though unions, Democrats and illegal alien “rights” activists spent millions to pass the driver’s license measure.Partial returns showed the measure going down with 64 percent against and 36 percent in favor.Well that is good news for Oregon, anyway. But you can bet that this won’t settle the issue. Democrats never heard the word defeat. Despite a massive loss this time, they will continue to throw this measure at voters repeatedly, you can be sure.
The measure pitted unions, some business groups and immigrant-rights organizations against a meagerly funded but tenacious campaign that referred the issue to the ballot after it passed the state Legislature and was signed into law by Gov. John Kitzhaber in May 2013.
Cynthia Kendoll, president of Oregonians for Immigration Reform, was excited about the outcome.
“I’m thrilled, needless to say,” she said late Tuesday. “It went the way we hoped it would go and all the hard work we did has paid off.”
She said the outcome was a victory for those who are “sick and tired of big business, special interest groups and unions controlling our government.”
