O'Reilly to Trump: You've Got to Give Specifics on Border Wall
Tuesday, August 4, 2015 09:30 PM
By: Greg Richter
Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly told GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump he will have to give specifics about how he will force Mexico to pay for a border wall once he faces debate moderators on Thursday.
Trump was a guest on O'Reilly's show Tuesday night, and the host reminded Trump of an interview following his June 16 campaign announcement. Trump had said he would build a border wall and "force Mexico to pay for it."
O'Reilly laughed at that statement, saying it would be impossible.
Trump on Tuesday still insisted he would do so, through stopping trade deals between the two countries. When O'Reilly suggested that meant a President Trump using an executive order to nullify the North American Free Trade Agrement, Trump didn't flinch.
"So simple," Trump insisted. "Mexico will pay for the wall. I will make sure it gets done properly.
"But how? What are you going to do to [Mexican President Enrique Peña} Nieto?" O'Reilly pressed. "They will say forget it."
"It's simple. They are taking in billions and billions of dollars," Trump said, pointing to a Ford Motor plant being built in Mexico."I'm going to say Mexico, guess what, this is not going to continue. You are going to pay for the wall. I have said they will pay for the wall and they will pay for the wall."
The price for the wall is "peanuts" compared to what Mexico is making off U.S. trade, he said.
Republican strategist Karl Rove appeared after Trump, saying that the line won't sell over time.
Trump's only challenge in Thursday's debate will be making people feel they can see him sitting in the Oval Office, and to do that he will have to actually explain how he will accomplish his goals – including the border wall, Rove said.
"He has got to be more substantive. He has got it have a plan."

Really? Why does Trump have to explain to his competition how he plans to build a border wall or get Mexico to pay for it?
Why should Trump lay out "specifics" or a "plan" when no one else in the debates has done so or even plans to build a wall or make Mexico pay for it?A Nation Without Borders Is Not A Nation - Ronald Reagan

Because without a plan it is nothing more than talk. We've heard it all before. The term "wall" sounds nice but for informational purposes, it's nothing more than another one of those hyped up fences we've been hearing presidential candidates shout about for years. I like the talk, but without a plan the American public can buy into, it's nothing more than talk. As for having Mexico pay for the fence, that is a comment that rings very empty with me, especially when the comment is not associated with a scheme on how you're going to accomplish it. I say give the American people something they can sink their teeth into, not just rhetoric. My latter comment is not only directed at Trump, it applies to all the candidates!

I see no valid reason for Trump to be singled out by Bill O'Reilly to offer specifics or provide a plan when no other candidate is asked to do so.

I realize he was only interviewing Donald Trump. But O'Reilly interviews other candidates and comments ad nausea about them so there was no reason to try to belittle Trump's goal of building a wall and making Mexico pay for it when he hasn't done so with other candidates.
