PHOENIX (KSAZ) - DPS Troopers arrested three men, accused of damaging cars with slingshots in the east valley.
Now one of those men, 18-year-old Aaron Nottingham is speaking out.

Nottingham is in jail for assault, endangerment, and criminal damage.

Some of the victims took pictures of Nottingham's car and license plate and called DPS.

Troopers tracked the three down to a location in Chandler.

He says he didn't know his buddies were shooting at cars with small rocks when he found out he couldn't do anything about it because he was behind the wheel.

"I want to apologize, I didn't mean for anybody to get hurt or for anybody to be scared, I didn't want anybody's vehicles to be damaged, I didn't mean for this to happen. Everyone is calling us the copy cat I-10 shooter, and that's not true, we're just a few teenagers going out and having fun and made a stupid decision and ended up here. I got a lot of threats the first time I was in my pod and I had one of the inmates give me a warning saying the other inmates didn't like me there, and he told me that he recommended me to stay somewhere else," said Aaron Nottingham.

Nottingham says he dropped out of high school, is homeless and living in his car. The other men arrested are Albert German and Christian Cook.

PHOENIX - We've heard from many of our viewers who want to understand why DPS is staying tight-lipped about the details involved in the Phoenix freeway shootings.

Former FBI agent, Brad Garrett, says authorities don't want to show their cards because they want to catch the suspect when he's comfortable, less stressed, and at a time when he's more likely to do something or say something that could get him caught.

"You want him to fall into a pattern and continue with whatever routine he's in," explains Garrett. "Does he go to work? Does he take kids to school? Because it won't surprise me if you have someone who has a family."

Why a family man? Garrett says it fits the profile. Suspects, like highway shooters, who commit the same crimes over and over again tend to lead parallel lives, where they have a family, a wife, and a job, while also engaging in illegal, bizarre behavior.

"The thing about repetitive crime, people do get caught because they can't help themselves," says Garrett. "They like what they're doing. It's a power thing. It's a release for them."

That means, according to Garrett, it's likely the suspect could strike again, even though it's been five days since any incident has been reported.

Still, he says we shouldn't be frozen by fear and, instead, says we need to live our lives in a very "aware way."

He says that means paying attention, remembering license plate numbers and reporting anything suspicious we see.

PHOENIX - A judge ordered the only person detained in connection with the Arizona freeway shootings investigation to be released on Friday.

Oscar de la Torre Munoz, 19, was detained on Sept. 11 in a quick undercover operation outside a gas station. Authorities have never called Munoz a suspect, only referring to him as a "person of interest" related to the investigation.

A spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said a police report had not been submitted by DPS so they had nothing to review for possible charges.

A woman who was with Munoz was briefly detained, but quickly released after it was determined that she was not related to the investigation.

There have been 11 confirmed shooting incidents along Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 since August 29. There have been no confirmed shootings since September 10, marking eight days without one.

Authorities have increased the reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter, or shooters, to $50,000.

DPS has received about 1,000 tips from the community and are actively investigating 550 of them.

They have passed out thousands of fliers about the case to nearby neighborhoods and have placed 16 digital billboards along the freeways and provides. ADOT has placed alerts on their electronic signs that hang over the freeways.
