Phoenix kidnapper arrested, deported from Juárez

A convicted kidnapper from Phoenix on the run for five years was arrested and deported from Juárez on Monday afternoon, the U.S. Marshals Service said Tuesday.

Mexican authorities arrested Isaias Chavarria on an immigration charge and handed him to the U.S. Marshal's Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in the middle of the Stanton Street international bridge, officials said.

In September 2010, Chavarria was free on bond while on trial when he fled before a Maricopa County jury came back with verdict finding him guilty of kidnapping, extortion and aggravated assault charges, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

Chavarria was convicted of being part of a group that in 2008 kidnapped a woman from her Phoenix home, blindfolded and sexually assaulted her for two days until a ransom was paid.

The U.S. Marshals Service learned Chavarria was living in Juárez and worked with Mexican immigration agents who arrested Chavarria on Monday.

We need some stricter rules about bonding out of jail as this case demonstrates. We also need judges that are not lenient on cases of kidnapping or rape, at bond setting and sentencing! It is difficult to find hope.
