In a deportation case that is drawing widespread support from the Ann Arbor community, a Muslim father of four is scheduled to appear before an immigration judge in Detroit today to argue for his release from a detention center.

Among his supporters are the city's mayor and two state representatives.

Outside the federal building, a rally was planned in advance of a 2 p.m. hearing, with supporters hoping to encourage U.S. immigration authorities and the legal system that Jordanian immigrant Yousef Ajin is an asset to the country and should not be torn apart from his family.

Ajin, who has lived in the U.S. for 18 years with his wife and four children – all U.S. citizens -- was detained on Jan. 30 while making a routine check-in with immigration authorities in Detroit. Immigration authorities have not explained why.

But many are reeling about his case, including state Rep. Yousef Rabhi, D-Ann Arbor, who took to Facebook this morning to express his support for Ajin, wrting:

"Today fellow Ann Arborite ... Yousef Ajin is facing deportation hearings after being detained by ICE last month. He is part of our community and would be leaving his family of American citizens behind. Many in our community have rallied behind Yousef and will be demonstrating peacefully in Detroit outside the hearing. While Representative Adam F Zemke and I could not be there in person due to the House being in session, we have both sent in official letters of support over the last few days speaking to Yousef's character and our hope that he will be granted his request to stay in Ann Arbor with his family.

Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor also took to Facebook after learning that Ajin had been detained after making a routine checkup with immigration authorities in Detroit.

"Mr. Ajin's detention and threatened deportation devastates an Ann Arbor family, an American family. Our country should be better than this," Taylor wrote in a Feb. 24 Facebook post.

Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Jeanice Swift also used social media to draw support for Ajin as she tweeted on Saturday: "We stand with you, Ajin Family!"

It is not clear why Ajin is being detained. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was not readily available for comment, neither was Ajin's lawyer, Christopher Vreeland.
