Gov. Ron DeSantis will sign a bill banning sanctuary cities in Florida on Friday, fulfilling a major campaign promise.

The Florida House and Senate passed the bill on May 2 despite major resistance from Democrats and immigration activist groups. DeSantis plans to sign the bill at a ceremony on Friday, DeSantis spokeswoman Helen Ferre confirmed to the News Service of Florida.

"Earlier this year, Governor DeSantis asked the Florida Legislature to present him with meaningful legislation to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no city or county jurisdiction can get in the way of Florida’s cooperation with our federal partners to enforce immigration law," Ferre said in statement.

"Public safety is paramount and local law enforcement agencies can and should work with the federal government to ensure that accountability and justice are one in our state," Ferre said.

The Republican governor promised to ban cities from protecting illegal immigrants who break the law from deportation while running for his first term in 2018. DeSantis beat Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum, the former mayor of Tallahassee, by less than 1%.

Under the bill, city officials are required to share the information of illegal immigrants caught violating the law with federal immigration officials.
