R.I. courts to retain firms targeted in sweep
R.I. courts to retain firms targeted in sweep
July 31, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The state's court system plans to continue using two janitorial companies that were caught up in a recent federal immigration sweep.
TriState Enterprises has agreed to fingerprint its current workers and enter their names into a federal database that verifies the validity of Social Security numbers.
Court spokesman Craig Berke says the other firm, Falcon Maintenance, will also be retained if it agrees to take the same steps.
The Carcieri administration canceled dozens of state contracts with Tri-State and Falcon after the July 16 immigration sweep in six courthouses. Federal authorities arrested 31 suspected illegal immigrants, although no criminal charges have been filed since the raids.
