Salt Lake City police chief blasts Ariz. immigration bill

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank can't believe the immigration bill that could soon become law in Arizona.

Immigration Law in Arizona Gets Tough
he Arizona House on Tuesday approved a bill to crack down on illegal immigration by making it against state law to be in Arizona without legal immigration documents.

"This sets law enforcement back 30 to 40 years," Burbank said on Wednesday's Doug Wright Show.

Arizona lawmakers have approved a bill that would make it a misdemeanor to not have the proper immigration paperwork. Also, police would be able to determine a person's immigration status based simply on reasonable suspicion.

Burbank calls that, in essence, racial profiling. He's also worried about the effect on documented workers and citizens.

"Because in order to get to those people, you have to ask anybody of color who looks like they might not be from this country," he explained.

If the bill becomes law, it would likely face a host of legal challenges. Although some technicalities need to be worked out, Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer is expected to sign it.

No it's not racial profiling. The police in Arizona can ask anyone for their imigration status. The way I read it is that it's like asking someone for their address or drivers license.

So the police chief does not want any illegals leaving Arizona and moving to Salt Lake City? I thought Utah welcomed illegals.

There's no need to racially profile. You continue to do yr job and require everyone to identify themselves. A DL or passport works. So will a visa.

If you find someone undocumented, make an inquirey of the FBI & ICE, just like the Secure Communities Initiative requires. Let ICE determine their legal status, not yr officers.

This police chief needs to enforce whatever laws were made in Utah, whether he likes them or not, and not complain about Arizona laws.

It's not about racial profiling, since it's about being illegal and illegal is not a race.
No Amnesty! An average of 25 Americans are killed every day by illegal alien criminals that have no right to be here.

Doesn't look to be very bright; maybe thats why he got confused in differentiating between Salt Lake City Utah laws and Arizona Laws
