Sekulow backs amnesty lawsuit by states

"We sent you there for a reason and one of those reasons is to make sure the executive is fulfilling its constitutional obligations and not exceeding its constitutional authority and take the appropriate action, which would be, in our view, is targeted defunding."

The head of a conservative law firm says individual states have a good chance of having standing in a lawsuit against President Obama's amnesty declaration.

Texas and 16 other states filed suit on Wednesday against the Obama administration, charging that the president's recent executive action on immigration is unconstitutional and violates federal law.

"I think the states would have a better chance at standing. Individual citizens it's very difficult," says Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice.

The complaint was filed in federal court in Brownsville, Texas by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott. He is also the incoming governor.

Regarding Congress, Sekulow says the American people need to hold congressional leaders' feet to the fire to take action.

"I'm hopeful that enough of the American people will contact their elected representatives - House and Senate - and say, We sent you there for a reason and one of those reasons is to make sure the executive is fulfilling its constitutional obligations and not exceeding its constitutional authority and take the appropriate action, which would be, in our view, is targeted defunding."

Conservatives are demanding language in the spending bill to strip money to pay for Obama's move to defer deportations and grant work permits to more than four million illegal aliens.
