BREA – One year after the U.S. Senate passed a measure to reform the country’s immigration laws, more than 400 advocates marked the anniversary — and the lack of action by the House — with a loud rally outside Congressman Ed Royce’s district office on Friday.
Police arrested six of the advocates who sat in the middle of Birch Street in the heart of downtown Brea with a large banner that read: “STOP SEPARATING FAMILIES.”
The event was preplanned, including the arrests, but the protestors surprised police by temporarily blocking the busy intersection at Birch and Brea Boulevard.
It was one of dozens of events planned across the country through the weekend to draw attention to the Senate bill that would pave the way to legalize some 11 million people living in the country illegally. Many political observers have said the issue is all but dead, as Republican leaders have refused to bring a similar bill for a vote before the House of Representatives.
But those who banged drums, marched and chanted on Friday said they remain hopeful.
“No matter what the politics, we’re not going to stop. It’s important for us to keep working,” said Dayne Lee, a spokesman for the Korean Resource Center in Los Angeles and Orange County. “We all still believe there’s something we can achieve this year.”
Advocates have repeatedly targeted Royce, a Republican, staging sit-ins, fasts and protests outside his Brea office. More than half of the district is made up of Latinos and Asians. Many of the demonstrators Friday arrived on buses from Los Angeles.
“The bulk of the protestors were not Rep. Royce’s constituents and arrived on Chula Vista Tour buses organized by the SEIU. Our staff invited the small number of constituents among the group to sit down and further discuss their concerns on their next visit,” said Saat Alety, Royce’s spokesman.
“Rep. Royce has and will continue to meet with constituents that want to have a constructive debate on the immigration issue. Unfortunately, the group today appeared more interested in noise and preplanned arrests meant to garner headlines than actually sitting down to discuss the issue,” Alety wrote in an e-mail.
Royce has said he wants to secure the border, implement employer verification processes and prioritize visas for high-skilled workers. He also has said it is unfair to be “inflexible” to children who were brought to the country “and know no other place to call home.”
The protestors arrested for refusing to disperse during an unlawful assembly, which is a misdemeanor, were taken to the Brea Police Department and released with an order to appear in court, said Lt. Darrin Devereux.
Police did not release the names of those arrested. The Service Employees International Union said four of the six arrested were from its labor group: Jeffrey Froelich, Luis Fuentes, David Stilwell and Alejandra Valles. The other two were Hee Joo Yoon from the Korean Resource Center and Santa Ana community activist Vanessa Gonzalez, according to Marisol Rivera, of the labor group.
