RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. -- An attempted murder suspect from Coachella and a 23-year-old inmate from Desert Hot Springs were at large Saturday after escaping from a lockup in Blythe late Thursday.

Robert Carlos Cruz, 24, of Coachella, who was being held on suspicion of attempted murder and has "Aztlan" tattooed across his chest; and Renee Chavez, 23, of Desert Hot Springs, who was being held on suspicion of possessing stolen property, were sought.

"At this point, we believe they are still in the Riverside County area because they have family and connections in the desert, but the investigation is still ongoing," said Deputy Denver Saucier of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Nine inmates escaped from the lockup at 260 N. Spring St. about 11 p.m. Thursday while at an outdoor recreation area, sheriff's deputies said. Within 35 minutes, four inmates were arrested, and a fifth was arrested at about 1 a.m. Friday.

Indio resident Michael Anthony Gonzalez, 24, and Desert Hot Springs resident Gregory Villarreal, 24, were captured about 3 p.m. in Palm Desert.

Gonzalez was being held on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and other charges, jail records show. Villarreal was being held on suspicion of armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and being a parolee with a firearm.
