DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — A South Texas man has been sentenced to six years in federal prison over a weapons smuggling ring linked to more than 15,000 rounds of ammo meant for Mexico.

Jesus Cardenas of New Braunfels (BRAHN'-felz) was sentenced Wednesday in Del Rio.

The 23-year-old Cardenas and his 34-year-old brother, Luis Cardenas, were convicted in February of two counts of smuggling ammunition intended for Mexico. Jurors also convicted Jesus Cardenas of two counts of smuggling ammo and assault rifle magazines.

Officers in late 2011 seized part of the ammunition and nearly two dozen assault rifles. More ammo and magazines were confiscated in early 2012.

Luis Cardenas awaits sentencing. A third person convicted, for being a felon in possession of about 4,300 rounds of ammo, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison.
