Stop immigration status checks, group asks Obama

LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of human rights groups are asking the Obama administration to end programs that allow local police to check the immigration status of arrestees.

A letter to the president Wednesday says it encourages racial profiling and calls it a dangerous merger of the federal immigration enforcement system with state criminal justice systems.

The letter is signed by the AFL-CIO and a broad range of criminal justice, peace, religious, ethnic and immigrant rights groups around the country, including the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is expanding a program that permits local police officers to run arrestees' names through a Department of Homeland Security database.

An e-mail to Homeland Security seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.

A Letter FROM the Left, TO the Left...

Well, let me just say that Immigration Status checks MUST BE MAINTAINED and that MORE must be done to find and remove all Illegal Aliens in the U S, as well as making it as inhospitable as possible in order to remove all incentives to come here and stay here Illegally.

how do they get racial profiling out of this ? as i understand it , everyone who's booked and arrested for a crime gets their info run ... if they run EVERYONE'S info , how in this green world can that be racial profling ?

How about if we don't check people stopped for speeding for their driver's license. Makes about as much sense.

These people are outrageous. Yeah, it's dangerous...to the person being checked. They could be kicked out and all those signees to the letter would lose their cheap employees and their congregation members along with these so-called advocate groups who need victims to represent and therefore MONEY.

How galling can you get to ask the police to stop doing their jobs because they might catch lawbreakers?!!

So in otherwords, if you get across the border you should be left alone.

Our federal government has made a mockery of our immigration laws.

Where can we find a list of groups signing this letter?
