I taught both documented & documented adult visitors, immigrants, and migrants in southern CA English for years and this isn't a surprise, based on what I witnessed in my classes. Afternoon classes were predominantly wealthy & middle class Asian students with a few undocumented moms & others. Evening classes were overwhelmingly undocumented students, many blue-collar males from Mexico & Central America, with a few gang & cartel members among them. My most memorable moment occurred when an Hispanic woman in the evening class went ballistic, standing up & shouting at two Hispanic men that she'd worked her butt off & sacrificed to work toward becoming legal, saving every scap of paper for 5 yrs. to prove she was learning English & meeting other requirements for the green card & so should they. It was a pivotal moment in my formerly liberal stance on migration. Second, I've kept contact with a Cambodian student whose husband was a refugee who later imported her to marry. They're so against illegal migration, having lived on next to nothing & forced to settle in Kansas after the Vietnam war. They lived in a majority illegal migrant community near the school & witnessed the crime & poverty uncontrolled migration has caused.
