Bush Will Offer Relief for Some on Home Loans

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 — President Bush, in his first response to families hit by the subprime mortgage crisis, plans to announce several steps Friday to help Americans who have credit problems meet the rising cost of their housing loans, administration officials said Thursday.

The officials said Mr. Bush would call for the Federal Housing Administration to change its federal mortgage insurance program in a way that would let an additional 80,000 homeowners with spotty credit records sign up, beyond the 160,000 likely to use it this year and next.

The administration is offering his plan, which will include what one official called jawboning of lenders to persuade them not to foreclose on some borrowers, at a time of growing attacks on Mr. Bush from Democrats who say he has remained on the sidelines amid increasing anxiety over whether millions of Americans could end up losing their homes. Other elements of the plan would need legislative action, requiring Mr. Bush to win over the Democratic leadership in Congress.

Administration officials, who asked not to be identified, briefed a handful of news organizations on the proposals to be announced by Mr. Bush at an appearance in the White House Rose Garden on Friday morning.

The main objective of the package, one senior official said, is not to affect the stock markets but to help low-income homeowners, many of them concentrated in certain neighborhoods in several distressed areas of the country, such as Ohio and Michigan.

“The primary focus is to help individuals who have an opportunity to stay in their homes to stay in their homes,â€

This is not right. The taxpayers should not be responsible for people who take out mortgages they can't afford. They buy houses with little or nothing down, run credit cards up for everything under the sun, have 2 or 3 cars setting in the drive, and then complain because they can't make their house payments! Bankruptcy is up over 60%, MAINLY because of credit card debt!

What about all the people who don't run up the credit card bills and don't have seveeral cards and a boat, etc.....that are making their house payments? Now they are going to pay for the ones who don't.........and most likely, even for illegals!

This is a mistake! The federal government shouldn't help those who can't afford the houses. But one the other hand some new home owners where lied too on there payments. The banks I think had this plan of destroying the housing sector by having everyone default on there mortgage and collect there property at a gain to them! Who knows???

Why in the world are we paying for this?The majority of these loans were givin to illigals.This is Bushs only reason for doing this.He will do anything to help these people at our expense.My 13 year old just flooded our home.70 % of the intior of our home is destroyed.I never once asked for help from this gov nor do I need it.But if my last name was Sanchez ill bet id get all the free aid I need.I no this sounds racist but I am soooooo tired of this gov giving our money to these people.These banks aught to be shut down or pay the price for their greed.

I agree with you! All these banks are soooo worried about giving Americans loans based on there "credit score" but if you speak Spanish and have a Hispanic sur-name its free reign for them and hey no social security card required either!!!

Really think about it. The big guy wins again. The banks. Who collect the big interest, baloon payments,down payments, repo the homes. Would appear to me the banks knew this all along. And how could they possibly lose. The only losers are the idiots that signed up for these loans to begin with. Why would anyone want ahome they couldn't afford.

I signed up for this blog site thinking that it would be a good thing to be part of an alliance against ilegals, but after reading some of the posts on this site especially the new one about the proposed mortgage help from the government, it is clear for me to see why this country will never be again the great nation it once was we are headed the way of russia and it wont be to much longer before all hell breaks out, the mentality or lack of, people who have posted here is incredible, I agree with anyone who is in favor of strict enforcement of our laws in regards to Ilegals, but to say that most people who are losing there homes are Ilegals, where do you morons get your information a cracker jack box, you idiot white trash rednecks are a bigger problem, do me a fovor you want to make a difference for all americans, stop smoking crack and drinking drano and go get yourself an education our government offers you a basic one for free, every time I turn on the news and see somebody cryinng on television because they are about to or already have lost there home are WHITE not black not hispanic "White People" and I dont think they are idiots for wanting a piece of the american dream, Ilegals cant buy homes, Wake UP America or sleep past extinction, lets put our efforts were they belong.

I hate to admit this buy we are paying a much higher mortgage because they base everything here on credit history and not what you earn. We plan on refinancing next year or once we are here long enough to build equity. The main issue was two-fold, 1) my husband is British and we just moved here, 2) my credit history was somehow all messed up and made no sense. So we had to "bite the bullet" and now pay too much. We were desperate...but we're doing ok.

Now, all these months later I am wondering if someone out there is using my SS# since my credit report made no sense at all? I didn't even have anything going on the 2 years I lived out of the country, so I have no clue how my score got so bad. I still had my bank account and credit card which I still used on occasion. Guess I should have contested it but too late now. Plus I did not want to give these credit agencies any money at all.

So yeah Countrywide is making a killing off of us and they were one of the ones who nearly went belly-up. They also tried overcharging us for some things which I put a stop to. Next time we will find a different mortgage company & drop Countrywide like a hot potato.

Anyway, this is just another stupid thing Bush is doing. I still cannot believe people voted him again.
