TN: Hispanic Students Missing From Schools

    Hispanic Students Missing From Schools

    Updated: Jan 25, 2008 07:18 AM PST

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. - The Robertson County school district faces some problems Friday morning after a recent crackdown on illegal immigration. The illegal immigration crackdown led to the vanishing of 11 percent of Hispanic students.

The district has been under state watch for failing to educate pockets of students, which includes non-English speakers.

Now of the 768 Hispanic students, 60 have formally withdrawn and another 25 to 30 can't be accounted for.

Public schools are required by a U.S Supreme Court decision to educate all students - regardless of their immigration status.

If the missing students don't return soon, they will be too far behind to succeed on upcoming achievement tests.

    Only 11 percent?

This is the statement of a reporter that doesn't know what they are talking about. They give exemptions for ESL kids and pass them anyway.

No child left behind, drangs everyone down.

Secondly, they were "behind" the minute they reached the school door because they can't speak English.

When I worked in an invaded school kids were always leaving with no notice. I can remember one girl that came to school and said she was moving at 2. She left promptly at 2. That was the only notice the school had that she was leaving.

There were lots of kids that left with no notice and we never saw them again. After so long the school would just drop them. There were others who would leave with no notice and then show back up in a few months, leave again and then come back. You never knew what to expect with these kids.

What really happens is that schools leave the decision up to the parents. If the parents want their kids to go on to the next grade the school won't hold them back. The school can try and talk the parents out of passing them but the final say is up to the parents.

Hopefully, now that many of these families have left town after the big raid at Electrolux, American children will be receiving more attention and a better education without the watering down.

Not too far away, in Bradley County, Tennessee, hundreds of ESL students crowd the schools of the City and County. Industry and businesses are suspected of large populations of illegal aliens.

Does anyone care if they are missing? How can you educate the 'uneducatable'? It's all about money...money that is being used for everything but education.

If we have to keep all these illegals and non-English speaking anchors in our school system...we should separate them completely from our regular public schools. They are a huge distraction and contribute NOTHING to the socio/cultural advancement of our schools. Here in L.A., we have so many abandoned factory buildings in the barrios where most of these kids live...why can't these buildings be rehabbed so that all the illegals and non-English speakers can occupy them? Why do our kids have to suffer for the failure of our government to enforce the laws? I say...deport them or separate them!
