HIDALGO -The crisis on the border continues to be a magnet for people thousands of miles away. Men claiming to be from south Asia were found in Hidalgo, near an area that is a known hotspot for smugglers.

Tomas de Leon, supervisor for Hidalgo County Water District 3 found the men from Nepal, while working at the Hidalgo County pump house. He said he sees many illegal crossers.

“Usually from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, but Nepal is something different,” he said.

De Leon said the eight men from Nepal were looking for Border Patrol. He said he phoned federal authorities.

“After they make that phone call, then a border patrol agent will take that phone call and will ask all the pertinent questions,” said Henry Leo, Border Patrol agent. “We’ll ask you who, what, when, where, why. And we will dispatch a Border Patrol agent to go and look into the call.”

Game wardens are no longer participating in the border security initiative. They’re back to their normal duties.

The Border Patrol said 388 people from Nepal have been apprehended within the last 11 months, nationwide. Last year, 467 Nepalese people were picked up nationwide.
