CARONA ATTEMPTS TO ATTACH FAILED HOMELAND SECURITY BILL TO SB 11
Expects to know later this evening whether strategy will work.

Sen. John Carona (R-Dallas) says he will attempt to attach the homeland security bill to Senate Bill 11, a second bill this session focused on homeland security.

The House just named its conferees on SB 11 today. Carona said the provisions that will be added to the bill will be the ones likeliest to get support from the Senate. That means topics like sanctuary cities -- or the more controversial immigration enforcement provisions -- are out of the bill amendment.

The House's deadline on printing conference reports has been set for 5 p.m. Carona expects to know, shortly after that, whether this new strategy will work.

House Sponsor Rep. David Swinford (R-Dumas) has said the creation of a homeland security office, as outlined in the bill, is crucial to provide the mechanism to use both the $137 million in expected federal funding and the $108 million set out in the state budget.
