LPD investigating rape of 14-year-old girl

A 14-year-old girl who left her home at 2 a.m. Saturday after arguing with her mother was then raped and held against her will by a man in the neighborhood.

Police Sgt. Ross Hester said the girl was walking in the 1100 block of 46th Street after she voluntarily left her house.

A woman at a duplex in the area invited the girl inside because she was concerned about her, but police said her husband later took the girl to a bedroom. The girl reportedly tried to fight the man off.

Officers arrested her accused rapist, who police said confessed to having sex with the teen, at the scene for aggravated sexual assault.

Investigators didn’t believe the crime was planned, but was opportunistic.

Hester said the suspect had been drinking at the time of the assault, but was not intoxicated.

It was unclear what his wife was doing during the assault, but Hester said investigators did not believe her to have been aware of it or involved with it.

The girl, who had a cell phone, called 911 for help after being inside the duplex for about 1 1/2 hours.

When officers arrived, the girl was escaping out a window.

She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

The suspect’s name was not released because there is some question as to his real identity. He is believed to be an illegal immigrant from Mexico, Hester said. Border Patrol agents were trying to identify the man, who was about 38 years old.

The man is believed to be in the United States working, doing jobs such as roofing.

Hester encouraged parents to make sure their children follow the city’s curfew laws because children and young teens are more likely to be victimized at night.

Those 16 and younger aren’t allowed to be in a public place or business between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. on school nights and midnight and 6 a.m. on weekends.
