TX: Shootings Continue Across the Border

    Shootings Continue Across the Border

    Last Update: 12:08 am

CIUDAD CAMARGO, MEXICO - It was another night of fear for the people of Camargo, Mexico. The city is located right across the Rio Grande City Port of Entry.

Everything was quiet at the border crossing. Traffic across the bridge was light. A woman who lives next to the bridge talked about the fighting. She asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. We'll call her Susan.

Susan says she was in Camargo three days ago. A friend called to tell her to get out shortly after a gun battle ensued. Susan says businesses and schools are closed there. She says the people are afraid.

Susan lives yards away from the bridge and knows what it's like to be afraid. She lived in Honduras and Nicaragua for 20 years. She says she's seen horrible things.

Susan says you never get used to knowing if you'll survive the day.

"Sometimes you realize that it's not going to be a good day. You're insecure about your safety and you live your life the best way you can," Susan said.

Susan says living in fear has made her appreciate living in America. Tonight, she prays for those who don't have that luxury.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS is still working to gather more information on the gun battle. We'll bring you the very latest as soon as it becomes available.

Devastating as it is, the destruction the terrible earthquake which just hit Chile did not take as many lives as were exteinquished during their long, lonely period of political tyranny after a small group of Communists, planted deliberately by the Russian government, took over their election process in the 1970's, followed by the U.S. government's apparent overt assistance in assasinating their legally-elected socialist president and helping install the military dictator who followed. Previously, Chile, a literate, stable, and creative "developing nation" with one of the longest traditions of democracy in our hemisphere, was a peaceful, tolerant place to live, and many of its educated young people were looking forward to bringing greater economic prosperity to far more members of its society within their own Chilean legislative framework and traditions - which most emphatically did not include the use of physical force. (Under their previous excellent Constitution, revoked byGeneral Pinochet, the Chilean military, like that of the United States, had been placed firmly under the rule of civilian leaders - the specific purpose of this was to prevent the "take-overs" by military forces which have played such an unfortunate role throughout Latin American history.)

From: lived there earlier and knew those who left after the shooting started.
