HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The immigration debate again has people at odds. On Saturday, families who say they've been hurt by immigration policies are telling their stories to lawmakers. But they were also met with protestors.
During Saturday's community meeting, Hispanic leaders say a 17-year- old girl broke down crying, describing how her mother and father had been deported, leaving her, a U.S. citizen, behind.
Immigration reform advocates hoped her story would generate sympathy for immigrants. But they also knew enough to expect it would attract critics.
As Hispanic leaders gathered inside Houston's Alpha and Omega Church to call for immigration reform, protesters clashed outside. One side was crying out for the safety of our country. The other, for compassion toward its immigrants. And both wanted change.
"We deal with this issue literally every day in our offices," said Houston Congressman Gene Green.
Congressman Green hosted Saturday's 'Family Unity' event to gather signatures on a petition, calling for the president to pass legislation by the end of the year to allow thousands of immigrants already in the U.S. to stay here.
"Why would we deport a mother and father if their child is a U.S. citizen?" said
But the group, Borderwatch, believes lawmakers should prioritize homeland security.
"We need to secure our borders and then we can talk about the details of people who are here," said
Their message, at one point, made its way inside the church to interrupt the events inside, showing there's no sacred ground in this debate.
Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are travelling to 23 cities across the country to hold these family unity events. Organizers say they've faced protests everywhere they go.

Good deport all parents if they are illegally in The United States. Americans are not to break laws so why are illegal aliens permitted to.
Deport them ICE
And let's hope Congress will get smart and send all these anchor babies with dual citizenship packing with their parents, soon.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

"Hispanic leaders say a 17-year- old girl broke down crying, describing how her mother and father had been deported, leaving her, a U.S. citizen, behind."
This is stupid - why wouldn't her parents bring the girl with them? She is still a minor and they are responsible for her. I have to say that any parents that would leave their kids here are bad parents. The argument is totally ridiculous. If the parents are illegal then they AND THEIR KIDS should go back to their home country - period. This Hispanic group is just using this poor girl for their political agenda. She belongs with her family in their home county.
I hope people from Texas reading this will call their reps and tell them that. It should be against the law to leave their minor kids behind.

Good for you, Mayflowerchick . We need to have protests all over our nation. let out government know that we want the illegals to be sent packing and we want our laws enforced. Why should we pay taxes, if our hard earned money is going to go to people that are in our country illegally?

duel citizens
She is a duel citizen. She could have gone with the parents. Its their fault for purposely dropping her in the U S for all the freebies and bennies AND for not taking her home. No sympathy for anchor babies or their unscrupulous parents who use them...
