U.S. Border Patrol Detains Armed Mexican Army Unit
YUMA, Ariz. (AP) -- The U.S. Border Patrol says it detained a Mexican army unit that had apparently accidentally crossed into the U.S. near Yuma early Friday.
The Mexican army Hummer and seven armed soldiers were found along the Colorado River less than a mile north of the border. Border Patrol spokesman Michael Bernacke says the Hummer was apparently disabled. Agents approached the vehicle, questioned the soldiers and took them into custody without incident.
Bernacke says the soldiers claimed they had become disoriented while on a patrol and accidentally crossed into the U.S. The border is poorly marked in the area.
The soldiers were taken to the border crossing in nearby San Luis, processed for return to Mexico and handed over to their commanding officer.

Mexican military makes accidental incursion into the U.S.
October 31, 2008 - 3:23PM
BY JAMES GILBERT, SUN STAFF WRITER
Agents from the Yuma Sector Border Patrol arrested and detained seven Mexican soldiers who had crossed into the United States on Friday morning.
According to agent Ben Vik, a spokesman for the Yuma Sector, the station received a call at about 8 a.m. that a military-style Hummer appeared to be disabled north of County 14th Street and the Colorado River.
Border Patrol agents and a Customs and Border Protection helicopter immediately responded to the area and located the vehicle and its passengers and determined that they had illegally crossed into the country, the patrol said.
The passengers, dressed in military-style clothing, identified themselves as members of the Mexican army. After informing them they were in the United States, agents took them into custody.
"They were an armed patrol," Vik said. "The soldiers were friendly and cooperative. After being told they were in the U.S. they peacefully relinquished their weapons to the agents."
Vik stressed that at no time there were any hostilities exchanged between the agents and the soldiers.
The soldiers, their weapons and the vehicle were placed in Border Patrol custody and taken to the San Luis Port of Entry, where they were each processed in accordance with Border Patrol policy. None of the subjects had any criminal or immigration history.
Vik said the soldiers, who were assigned to the 23rd Regiment Motorized Cavalry of the Mexican army, claimed that they had become disoriented while on patrol on the Mexican portion of the area and had accidentally crossed into the United States.
"When agents encountered them, they told the agents they were lost," Vik said. "As it turns out, the area where they crossed is very deceptive. There is nothing there to indicate, other then the low banks on either side that it is a river. To someone who is not familiar with the area it is an understandable mistake."
Vik said the soldiers also stated that they had run out of gas.
The soldiers, weapons and vehicle were returned to Mexico, Vik said, and remanded into the custody of their commanding officer.
Vik added the incident remains under investigation, but that the incursion has been determined to be accidental.
CBP Office of Internal Affairs was also notified of the incident.

These Mexican soldiers were about 4 miles from the Yuma Marine Corps Air Station, and if you zoom in what looks to be Air Force One parked out there.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Tancredo Condemns U.S. Border Incursion
Reliable sources inside US Border patrol and local Arizona law enforcement say heavily armed men dressed as Mexican military and driving a Mexican Army Humvee have been detained 200 yards inside U.S. border near Yuma
(WASHINGTON, DC) – U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado) today condemned a border incursion by heavily armed men dressed as Mexican military personnel. According to Lou Dobbs, several individuals were apprehended this morning by the Border Patrol on the U.S. side of the southern border near the Colorado River southwest of Yuma, Arizona.
"These blatant violations of U.S. sovereignty must stop," Tancredo said. "Those involved in this incident must be held accountable for violating our laws and the U.S. State Department must stop whitewashing these incidents."
It is not yet clear at this point whether the incursion was related to drug smuggling or simply a Mexican military operation to test our response. Over 250 such incursions by military or uniformed police have been documented since 1995. In September, a military incursion, southwest of Tucson, where a Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint by the Mexican military resulted in a formal diplomatic protest to the Mexican government by the State Department.
"This has gone on for far too long," Tancredo concluded. "Our borders must be secured in order to prevent violent drug cartels and Mexican military personnel from infiltrating our borders. Whether they are Mexican military personnel or drug cartel traffickers dressed as military is immaterial--- the Mexican government is complicit in either case for allowing this to happen."
Tancredo called on the leadership of the Border Patrol to release photographs of the Mexican Army Humvee and the six Mexican soldiers and their weaponry.
