Most people are disasters waiting to happen. I learned that long ago, that 99 percent of people can't even manage their own lives without causing trouble somewhere. So why would we want to have more people like that in this country? Also my direct experience---and agreed by really expert sources, too---is that people throughout the world are generally underhanded. Travel to a developing country and you will find out fast. The Protestant ethic at least encourages people to restrain themselves from general skullduggery.

So even if a lot of Americans are not as spry as they used to be, we sure don't need a bunch of new deadbeats here. If more people were the answer, Canada and Australia wouldn't have a better standard of living than we do.
