N.C. State Athlete's Immigration Hearing Continued
http://www.wral.com/news/9180944/detail.html
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The immigration hearing for a North Carolina State University basketball standout who is in the country illegally has been continued until next month.
Sophomore Gavin Grant will appear again in an Atlanta court on June 27, where his immigration status will be discussed.
The 21-year-old forward/guard moved to The Bronx, N.Y., from Jamaica when he was 9 years old, and does not have valid paperwork to be in the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents said last October, but they would not discuss the case any further.
On his college application, Grant said he was not a U.S. citizen but said that he was working toward it. More than a year ago, he worked with Miami attorneys to try to defer his deportation, but his request was denied.
A tip led local federal agents to interview Grant. Although officials would not talk about the tip, they said it had nothing to do with Grant's N.C. State application.
Although Grant, who is now married to a United States citizen, could be forced to return to back to Jamaica, a judge could also grant him relief and allow him to stay in the U.S.
There is also a poll and an active forum as to whether he should be deported or not. So far the poll is favoring not deporting him.
