Undocumented Students Stage Hunger Strike
July 31st, 2007 @ 1:07pm
by Doug Ramsey/KTAR
A week-long hunger strike for undocumented students continues at a Hispanic bookstore in Phoenix.
The fast supports legal status through the federal Dream Act and opposes Arizona's Proposition 300, which requires illegal immigrant students to pay higher out-of-state tuition.
"Some of these people could be the teachers we need in this state, the nurses we need in this state. We're not in the best shape in education… to let go of these people," said ASU student Luis Avila.
Avila said seven people are participating in the hunger strike. Approximately 300 others linked by the Internet are giving up things important to them, including cell phones and video games.
Congress could vote on the Dream Act this fall.

How can they become teachers or nurses, if they are illegal aliens. A college degree doesn't grant them citizenship. I just don't get it.

Immigration protests by seven college students set to end Sunday
Associated Press - August 4, 2007 5:04 PM ET
PHOENIX (AP) - A hunger strike intended to draw attention to a proposal in Congress to give children of illegal immigrants the chance to become U.S. citizens is drawing to a close.
The weeklong hunger strike by the seven Arizona State University students was set to end at noon tomorrow.
Under the proposal to which the students were trying to draw attention, immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children could be granted a 6-year period in which they would complete either two years of college education or two years of military service.
The protest also was inspired by a new Arizona law that prohibits employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants and a voter-approved law that denied illegal immigrants certain government benefits, such as cheaper in-state tuition and state-funded financial assistance at the state's public universities and community colleges.
