US man on jet ski shot in Mexican waters
US man on jet ski shot in Mexican waters
(09-30) 14:47 PDT Zapata, Texas (AP) --
A Texas sheriff says an American tourist was shot in Mexican waters after being approached by two boats of armed men.
Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said Thursday that a 30-year-old man and his wife were riding jet skis back from Mexico when the gunmen approached. Gonzalez said the man was shot in the head as the couple sped away.
Gonzalez said the wife fears her husband is dead. He said he has contacted the consulate in Mexico to ask them to look for the man.
The shooting happened near Falcon Lake, where state officials earlier this year warned boaters of pirates patrolling the waters.

BROWNSVILLE — Gunmen presumed to be Mexican drug operatives opened fire today on a couple riding water skis on the binational Falcon Lake reservoir, possibly killing the husband and sending the woman fleeing frantically to the U.S. side.
Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said the couple — believed to be from McAllen — had crossed to the Mexican side when they came under a spray of bullets by two boatloads of men. The man, 30, was shot in the head and his wife said she fears he is dead.
“They saw them approaching and started revving it up back to the U.S. side,â€

ZAPATA — Law enforcement officials here gave up their search for the body of a McAllen man presumed dead after pirates shot him and toward his wife on the Mexican side of Falcon Lake.
Investigators believe David Michael Hartley, 30, died after he was shot in the back of the head as he and his wife fled from three approaching boats, said Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez.
Tiffany Hartley, 29, swung her personal watercraft around in an attempt to retrieve her husband’s body but had to leave it in order to escape the continuing onslaught of bullets.
“The boats actually followed her back past the (United States) boundary,â€

UPDATE
Texas sheriff: Mexican bandits entered US waters(AP)
ZAPATA, Texas — A Texas sheriff says armed Mexican bandits chased an American boater into U.S. waters after shooting her fleeing husband in the head.
Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez also says the bandits probably plucked 30-year-old David Michael Hartley's body from Falcon Lake after the ambush, or let him sink so no evidence of his death remains.
Hartley and his wife, Tiffany, were riding their personal watercrafts from Mexico toward Texas when about six gunmen approached in two boats. Gonzalez says the ambushers shot Hartley as the couple sped away. His wife wasn't hurt.
U.S. and Mexican authorities are resuming the search for Hartley's body Friday.

Officials Issue Warning After Murder on Falcon Lake
by Julian Aguilar
October 1, 2010
Following the fatal shooting of a U.S. citizen boating on Falcon Lake Thursday, Texas law enforcement agencies are asking visitors to the popular freshwater fishing spot to stay clear of the Mexican side of the international body of water.
A 30-year-old man was shot in the head by Mexican gunmen, officials said, after he and his wife navigated their Jet Skis past the international boundary in what officials say was a sight-seeing trip to Guerrero Viejo, Tamaulipas. Authorities have not found the man's body, but he is presumed dead. Officials allege the attackers were armed Mexican pirates, who continued shooting at the surviving wife after she fled back toward U.S. waters.
“The Zapata County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department are telling boaters on Falcon Lake to stay on the United States side of the lake and not venture into Mexican waters,â€Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn

ZAPATA - A McAllen man is presumed dead in Mexico, after being attacked while riding his jetski on Falcon Lake.
Investigators say around 2:40 Thursday afternoon, 30-year-old David Heartley and his wife Tiffany crossed into Mexican waters to do some sightseeing.
They were headed to Old Guerrero City when they noticed some boats coming at them. The couple tried to outrun the armed men, but David Heartley was shot.
Tiffany managed to make it back to shore and alert authorities.
Zapata County Sheriff Sigifrido Gonzalez Jr says this is his worst nightmare.
"The one thing I dread on Falcon Lake has happened. The lake is not secure and the border is not secure. We can't go to Mexico, we can't recover the body. We can't investigate, we have to tell the family we can't do anything about it," he says.
The Heartleys had been planning on returning to their home town in Colorado in the next two weeks.
