USBP Agents, Partners Aid Pregnant Migrant

DULZURA, Calif.—U.S. Border Patrol agents came to the aid of a pregnant female on Otay Mountain yesterday.
The incident happened Dec. 9, at approximately 10 a.m., when agents patrolling the wilderness area near Otay Mountain Truck Trail apprehended a group of six illegal aliens, all Mexican nationals.

Shortly after the apprehension, an adult female in the group advised agents that she had fallen from a rock prior to their encounter and had vomited twice since the fall. The migrant also advised agents that she was approximately two months pregnant. Agents on-scene notified the sector’s Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) team, who responded immediately. Upon arrival, BORSTAR agents rapidly assessed the situation and requested air assets to transport the woman off the mountain.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE) responded, bringing air assets to hoist the woman off Otay Mountain. Taking her to the Dulzura Fire Station, emergency medical services then transported her to a nearby hospital.
“Collaboration saves lives,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “This rescue highlights the importance of teamwork among Federal, state, local, and non-governmental agencies. I am extremely proud of each party’s contribution and their life-saving efforts.”
